What can I expect from Lay Spirits?

For 10 months, your formation group will explore topics relating to prayer, self, community, work, and church.

For ten months, your formation group will explore topics relating to prayer, self, community, work, and church. You will be part of an authentic Christian community informed by the gospel message. You can expect a journey that will deepen your experience of faith through prayer, introspection, and sharing within your group.

A group of approximately 10 people, with the assistance of two co-facilitators, listen, pray, reflect and share as they explore a broad spectrum of spiritual practices. The program emphasizes Ignatian Spirituality and also includes presentations by guest speakers on practices such as Zen, Taize, Tai Chi, and lectio divina. Through personal reflection, spiritual conversation and spiritual direction, participants seek a closer connection to God and accompany each other on the journey.

What kind of people will I meet?

All kinds. People of any profession, background, age, or address. People who want to bring a prayer perspective to everyday life. People who want to broaden their experience of church. People who want a relationship with God.

How much time will it take?

Meetings are held for two hours one night each week, usually Tuesdays, from September to June. Every sixth week, the group meets instead for a Saturday session. The group takes breaks for Christmas and Easter. There is a winter weekend retreat at the Jogues Retreat House in Cornwall, NY. The program culminates in an eight-day silent Ignatian directed retreat at the Linwood Retreat House outside Rhinebeck, NY during the summer.
